A Monumental Tribute to Snowshoe Thompson

John "Snowshoe" Thompson was a unique and heroic Norwegian immigrant who delivered the mail and other goods between Placerville and Genoa from 1856 to 1876 on what was probably the first pair of wooden skis in the West. He performed these self-appointed duties at great personal risk, making the treacherous 9O-mile trek over the Sierra Nevada Mountains twice a month every winter. He was never fully compensated by the US Postal Service. "Snowshoe" is buried in the Genoa cemetery. Plans are in place to honor this great man by erecting a bronze statue in Genoa.

The Greater Genoa Business Association has selected a sculptor, Don Budy from Colorado, and is kicking off a major fund raiser to finance this project. A limited number of personalized bricks are available for a tax- deductible minimum donation of $100.00 each. The bricks will become a permanent part of the base of the sculpture. It is hoped that the sculpture will be completed and in place in time for the Snowshoe Thompson Days Festival in Genoa at the end of June 2001.
