The Genoa Cemetery

The Genoa Cemetery was opened in the1860's to provide an alternative to the Chinese Cemetery which was located among residences.  The land was donated by US Senator JW Haines and deeded in sections to the town, the Masons and the Oddfellows. It was later deeded to the Genoa Cemetery Association which still controls the cemetery. First to be buried there was a male schooltecher whose headstone was a marble dressertop. He has since been joined by many early settlers and members of old families and newcomers. One of the most visited graves is that of John A. "Snowshoe" Thompson, the legendary "MailMan of the Sierra"   This material is copyrighted by author Nancy C.
